The Sun Is Trying to Kill Your Auckland Home. But We’re Calm About It. Mostly.
Let’s be honest for a moment — and I mean properly honest, not the “sure-I-read-the-terms-and-conditions” sort of honest. The Auckland sun is not your friend. Not really. It pretends to be, of course — winks through the pohutukawas in Mission Bay, reflects seductively off the Waitematā like a catalogue photo for kayaks and disposable income — but then it absolutely melts your deck chairs and turns your living room into a low-budget greenhouse experiment.
Add to that the wind — oh the wind, that opportunistic little saboteur who shows up at exactly the wrong moment (usually when someone’s balanced a tray of Coronas and is making bold moves toward the edge of your balcony in Devonport) — and you’ve got yourself what experts might call “a hostile outdoor environment,” and what you call “every bloody Saturday.”
But here’s the rub. You love your home. You like your view. You’re not about to move to Hamilton just for some shade. (No offence. Well. Maybe a little.) Which is exactly why we exist.
We’re Sunguard, and we make sun and wind protection systems designed specifically for Auckland’s particular brand of weather. You know the one — that cheerful, beachy microclimate that turns into horizontal rain and UV-fueled interrogation within the same hour. We’ve worked across the whole region — from the salt-smeared decks of the North Shore to west-facing villas in Herne Bay that cop full sun from noon till forever — and if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s this:
Most outdoor shade solutions behave in Auckland like tourists in Piha surf: enthusiastic, unprepared, and rapidly airborne.
We do things differently. Take our Ziptrak® blinds, for instance. These aren’t the usual flappy café curtains you’ve seen doing interpretive dance in the wind down Ponsonby Road. No. These are guided, sealed, and specifically built to withstand gusts that would make a Wellingtonian nod in recognition. You get privacy, shade, and crucially — control. You decide when the sun is welcome. Not the other way around.
And then there’s our Muriwai aluminium shutters. Named, quite appropriately, after a beach that seems personally invested in sandblasting anything vertical. These shutters are sleek, adjustable, and — dare we say — rather stylish, in that clean-lined, Bond-villain’s-weekend-retreat kind of way. They hold up under pressure and keep you comfortable without making your home look like it’s about to launch into orbit.
Want retractable shade that won’t fly off mid-souvlaki? Our Fetuna Cassette awnings offer the kind of civilised, push-button shade that makes outdoor dining not only possible, but pleasant. They tuck away neatly when not in use, much like one’s enthusiasm for gardening in February.
And all of this — all of it — is made and installed with Auckland conditions in mind. Because we live here. We’ve been on your windy deck. We’ve stood in that full-sun conservatory that feels like a Dutch oven with throw pillows. We know what the salt air does to lesser materials. And we’re not interested in selling you something that looks pretty for one summer and spends the rest of its existence whimpering under a tarpaulin.
This isn’t just about comfort — although that’s a lovely bonus. It’s about longevity. Protection. Preventing your furniture from fading, your power bill from ballooning, and your patience from unravelling every time the forecast says “gusty”. Which, let’s face it, is most days ending in “y”.
And look, don’t just take our slightly frazzled word for it. The Ministry of Health has been banging on for years about UV exposure here being among the highest in the world. That’s not just a fun sun-fact. That’s your flooring warping, your leather cracking, your indoor plants begging for mercy.
So: if you’ve got a north-facing courtyard in Mt Eden, a wind-whipped deck in Howick, or a sunroom in St Heliers that’s one day away from self-combustion — we can help. We’ve seen it all. And we’ve built for worse.
Because at Sunguard, we don’t just believe in good shade. We believe in shade that fights back.
