Ziptrak® Blinds by SunGuard: Custom-Made Excellence for Any Project

Ziptrak® blinds, a premium Australian system, are custom-made in Auckland and are a specialty of SunGuard. Ideal for both residential and commercial projects, these blinds are crafted to endure New Zealand’s demanding weather conditions, providing exceptional wind and rain protection with a stylish and durable vertical track system. Their innovative spring-assisted mechanism guarantees smooth operation, enabling you to effortlessly adjust the blinds to any height without gaps, hooks, or ropes.

Featuring user-friendly bottom locks, Ziptrak® outdoor screens stay securely in place when lowered and can be easily released with a robust plastic centre lock lever. For enhanced weather protection, we offer the option to add a protective pelmet or partial flashing to your Ziptrak® blinds, ensuring comprehensive coverage and long-lasting performance.

Optional Features: Flashing or Pelmet

Enhance the functionality and appearance of your Ziptrak® screens with our optional finishing touches.

At the top of the blind, we offer two choices: a flat aluminium flashing or an aluminium pelmet. The aluminium flashing, available in a colour that matches the bottom rail, covers one side of the blind roll and provides protection from one side while bridging the small gap between the blind roll and the ceiling or framing above.

Alternatively, the 135mm or 165mm aluminium pelmet encloses the entire blind roll, resembling a box with a small gap at the bottom to allow smooth movement of the blind fabric. This pelmet offers comprehensive coverage and conceals the gap between the blind roll and the ceiling, enhancing both the appearance and functionality of your installation.

If you choose not to use the pelmet or flashing, a 20mm gap will remain between the top of the roll and the framing above. In cases where the roof slopes, this gap may be larger, but it can be covered with a custom-made flashing or infill to ensure a seamless finish.

Installing Ziptrak® Blinds Under Angled or Curved Roofs

Ziptrak® drop-down screens can indeed be installed under angled or curved roofs with ease. Although outdoor patio blinds must be mounted at a horizontal level, this will result in a triangular gap above the blind. Depending on the size of this gap, we offer the option to fit a permanent infill or custom flashing above the blind. This infill ensures complete water and wind protection by closing the gap and maintaining the effectiveness of the blinds.

Our infills are relatively simple to install and provide a sleek, clean finish. They can be fitted to various surfaces, including both timber and metal, using a system of awning tracks. This solution seamlessly integrates with your existing setup while enhancing the overall functionality and appearance of your Ziptrak® blinds.

Ziptrak® Removable Post Kit

Ziptrak® blinds can be installed using a removable post kit, which is ideal for situations where there are no two poles or walls available for track installation. This kit also allows for the installation of two blinds ‘butted’ against each other, with a removable post between them to provide an unobstructed view or passage when the blinds are not in use.

The removable post is designed for ease of use, featuring a spring-assisted lock at ground level for simple removal and reinstallation. Made from a 50×50 powder-coated aluminium square bar, the post is versatile and suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.

Component Colours and Fabric Options

Our Ziptrak® screens come in a range of component colours and fabric options to match your design preferences and functional requirements. Standard component colours include Pearl White, Ironsand Matt, and Satin Black. For a personalised touch, we offer Dulux custom powder coating at no extra charge, enabling you to seamlessly integrate the screens with your existing décor.

Fabric Options

We offer a diverse selection of fabrics to suit your needs. Our Shadeview mesh, an Australian fabric with a classic basket weave, is available in 36 colours and is specially designed for Ziptrak®. For a more modern look, we offer Serge Ferrari Soltis mesh fabrics, a perforated soft rubber fabric available in 45 colours, including both calm and bright shades. Both Shadeview and Serge Ferrari Soltis fabrics come in different opacities, allowing you to achieve the perfect balance between views, shade, and protection from the wind.

If you’re after a waterproof option, the Serge Ferrari Soltis W96 is available in 5 colours and provides excellent light filtration while ensuring complete privacy. Unlike other fabrics, it cannot be seen through from either side.

Additionally, you can choose between clear or tinted PVC, with FR PVC available for fire-resistant needs. SunGuard outdoor blinds utilise Achilles PVC (0.75 mm), celebrated for its superior durability and comfort across all weather conditions. Produced in Japan, this UV-stabilised PVC is distinguished by its clarity and robustness, making it an excellent choice for elevating both residential and commercial outdoor spaces.

For a classic touch, we also offer Docril Acrylic Canvas (Spain). Renowned for its exceptional colour fastness, Docril features a selection of 79 premium fabrics in both plain and striped designs. These fabrics provide excellent sun protection, blocking up to 90% of harmful UV rays while maintaining their vibrant appearance over time.

Operation

Ziptrak® screens by SunGuard provide both manual and automatic operation, ensuring flexibility and ease for any environment.

For manual operation, you can effortlessly raise or lower the screens using a bar at the bottom. The innovative slotted tracks of the Ziptrak® system enable the blinds to glide smoothly and stop at any desired position without the need for cords, ropes, or latches. Once positioned, the blinds can be securely locked down to withstand high winds and block UV rays—no zippers or buckles required.

Optional Accessories:

• Reverse Handle: Ideal for doorways or areas requiring access from both sides, a reverse handle can be added to the centre lock release for enhanced convenience.
• Pull-Down Hook: For blinds mounted too high to reach by hand, a pull-down hook facilitates easy lifting and unlocking from the locked position in one smooth action.

For automated operation, Ziptrak® blinds can be motorised with any fabric, including clear PVC, mesh, or acrylic canvas. The motor can be installed on either side (left or right) depending on your power outlet location. Professional installation is recommended, with hardwiring and power connection performed by a certified electrician. Motorised blinds can be controlled via a wall switch or remote control, offering effortless operation.

For our Ziptrak® blinds, we primarily use Alpha motorisation, celebrated for its intuitive design, exceptional reliability, and affordability. Alpha stands out with one of the most extensive warranty policies on the market, offering 7 years of coverage for your peace of mind.

For control options, you can choose from wall-mounted switches or the Pioneer/Navigator series handheld remote controls, available in 1, 4, 8, or 16 channel units. The Neo WiFi Hub and App provide remote control of your motorised blinds via the internet, allowing you to manage them individually, by area, or for the entire house, with scheduling features for automated operation.

To enhance convenience and protection, we also offer Alpha wind sensors that automatically retract the blinds upon detecting high wind levels. Additionally, wireless sun and rain sensors are available to further safeguard your outdoor blinds and optimise their performance.

Ziptrak® Maintenance Tips

For spring-balanced (hand-operated) Ziptrak® blinds, always operate from the centre to ensure the fabric, mesh, or PVC rolls evenly. Operating from one side may result in an uneven bottom bar.

For motorised Ziptrak® blinds, always supervise them while in motion. Avoid retracting or lowering the blinds in high winds, as wind pressure can obstruct the motor.

In stiff winds, either lock the blinds down at the bottom or fully retract them onto the top tube. Keep the blinds retracted during storms, cyclones, or extreme weather events.

If it’s windy, gently push against the blind material to reduce pressure before operating the Ziptrak®.

Avoid rolling up blinds when they are wet or have condensation, as trapped moisture can cause mould.

Generally, Ziptrak® blinds require minimal aftercare. However, if installed in a dusty environment, applying a lubricant like food-grade silicone spray (e.g., Helmar H4000) can ensure smooth operation. Avoid oil-based lubricants such as WD40, as they can damage the product and attract dust.

Cleaning Your Ziptrak® Outdoor Screens

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain your sunscreen mesh or PVC blinds.

Use a soft cloth and cold, soapy water. Allow the blinds to dry completely before rolling them up.

Avoid using strong detergents, cleaning soaps, insecticides, or other chemicals on the blinds. Do not use bore water or high-pressure hoses.

Prevent dirt, stains, and bird droppings from accumulating on the blind material.

When cleaning PVC material, handle it with care to avoid scratches and marks. For the best results, dry PVC blinds with a clean, soft cloth.
