Ellipse Monobloc folding arm awning

The Ellipse is a simpler folding-arm design, built to give you reliable shade at a more accessible price point. It uses high-quality components sourced from China, which helps keep the cost down without turning it into a “cheap” product.

It’s also a proven option. The Ellipse has been on the New Zealand market for over 20 years, so it’s well tested in local conditions.

You’re still getting a solid structure, quality fabric options, and smooth operation — just without the added cost of a fully enclosed system.

There are also a couple of practical advantages.

You can add a hood for extra protection when closed, and the adjustable pitch lets you fine-tune the angle — useful for low sun or changing conditions throughout the day.

The main trade-off is exposure.

Even with a hood, the Ellipse isn’t fully sealed like a cassette awning. The fabric and arms are still more exposed to sun and weather over time, which can affect how it looks long-term — especially in harsher environments.

That said, in the right setup it works well.

If your awning is going under a soffit, in a sheltered area, or you just want a practical solution without over-investing, the Ellipse is a solid, proven choice.

Horizon vs Fetuna vs Ellipse vs Integral — What’s the Trade-Off?

If you’re deciding between our retractable awnings models, it comes down to protection vs flexibility.

✔ Fetuna awning is a heavy-duty cassette retractable awning — everything is sealed away when retracted.

✔ Integral awning is a smaller cassette awning — fits smaller spaces and works great when heavy-duty cassette is not required.

✔ Horizon is a heavy-duty open type awning — with optional hood protection, but not fully sealed.

✔ Ellipse is an entry-level folding arm awning – most budget-friendly and has the optional adjustable pitch.

What you get with the Ellipse awning:

✔ Cost-effective awning with coverage up to 6 x 4 m

✔ Adjustable pitch and hood options

✔ Components from high-quality aluminium and stainless steel

✔ 3 hardware colours to choose from

✔ Simpler, more traditional folding-arm design

The Simple Way to Choose

✔ Go with Fetuna if:
→ you want maximum protection and a cleaner, premium finish

✔ Go with Horizon if:
→ you don’t need full enclosure of the cassette, or want a solid, reliable awning with European design

✔ Go with Ellipse if:
→ you need a cost-effective retractable awning that can cover a big deck, or want the adjustable pitch feature

✔ Go with Integral if:
→ you want a fully enclosed cassette awning, but don’t want to spend as much as the Fetuna

It is our go-to folding arm awning, making it one of the most affordable outdoor shades on the market. Available in warm white, matt black and silver pearl hardware colour, this easy to install and operate awning is a great solution for any outdoor area. Hardware can be powder coated in any custom Dulux colour for an additional charge.

Choose between the hundreds of Docril acrylic fabrics – from plains to stripes, textured or not – it is your choice!

Ellipse folding awning can be both manual and automatic. Manual awnings are crank operated – easily open and close the awning. Manual awnings have the benefit of not relying on the electricity and not having to be powered by the electrician.

Ellipse awning can also be fitted with adjustable pitch arms – this allows you to change the angle the awning slopes at whenever you’d like.

You can also opt for a motorised Ellipse folding arm awning – choose between hard-wired wall switches or wireless remotes. We use Alpha and Somfy motors. Automated awnings can be fitted with rain/wind/sun sensors to make their operation even easier. We can also fit this awning with a manual override enable motor – allowing to retract the awning manually in case of a power outage.

Ellipse Monobloc Retractable Awning – frequently asked questions

What is an Ellipse Monobloc awning?

It’s a cost-effective folding arm retractable awning designed to provide reliable shade without the complexity or price of fully enclosed cassette systems.

How big can the awning be?

The Ellipse can typically cover areas up to around 6 metres wide and 4 metres projection, making it ideal for decks, patios, and outdoor living spaces.

Is it manual or motorised?

Both options are available. You can choose a simple manual crank system or upgrade to motorised operation with remote control and optional sensors.

Is it a good option compared to cassette awnings?

Yes—if you’re looking for a more affordable solution. The Ellipse is an open-style awning, so it’s less protected than a full cassette but offers excellent value and performance for most residential setups.

Can I adjust the angle of the awning?

Yes—optional adjustable pitch arms allow you to change the angle, helping control low sun and improve shade throughout the day.

Is it suitable for NZ weather?

Yes—it’s built with aluminium frames and quality components designed to handle sun, wind, and typical New Zealand outdoor conditions.

Does it provide rain protection?

It can offer light rain protection when angled correctly, but it’s primarily designed for sun shade rather than heavy rain coverage.

Where can it be installed?

The Ellipse is commonly installed on decks, patios, and outdoor entertaining areas, and can be mounted to walls, soffits, or brackets depending on your setup.

How long does it last?

With quality components and proper installation, it’s designed to provide long-lasting performance, with many systems lasting 10+ years or more.

Is it the right awning for me?

It’s a great choice if you want a budget-friendly, reliable retractable awning for everyday use—especially in sheltered or semi-protected areas.
