Completed a custom shade sail installation at Te Kohanga Reo o Hoani Waititi Marae, creating a durable and practical outdoor shaded area for everyday use while complementing the existing surroundings of the marae. The project featured a four-corner architectural sail with a 24 m perimeter, designed to provide reliable sun protection while maintaining an open and welcoming outdoor space.
The sail was fabricated using Monotec 370 in Bundena Blue, one of the strongest commercial-grade shade mesh fabrics available. Manufactured in Australia, the fabric was selected for its long-term durability, clean appearance, and ability to span larger areas while maintaining excellent tension. Offering up to 90% UV protection, Monotec 370 also features stain and grime resistance along with a 15-year warranty, making it ideal for high-use community environments. Its extra-wide 6.5 m fabric width allowed for fewer seams, giving the finished sail a cleaner and more seamless architectural look.
The installation made use of the site’s existing timber and steel posts, carefully integrating the new sail structure into the current layout while ensuring correct tensioning and load distribution. All connections were completed using polished marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware, including D-shackles and turnbuckles, providing high corrosion resistance and a durable long-term finish.
The completed project delivered a strong visual feature for the space while creating a cooler and more comfortable outdoor area for tamariki, whānau, and community gatherings throughout the year.
