This custom shade sail installation in Northland was designed to provide durable, high-performance outdoor protection while complementing the natural tones of the surrounding landscape and architecture. Combining premium materials with precision engineering, the project delivers a modern and functional outdoor living solution built to withstand New Zealand’s demanding coastal and rural environments.
The sail features a wire-edge perimeter system, allowing exceptional tension control and flexibility while maintaining a crisp, architectural appearance. Reinforced corners and marine-grade stainless steel components ensure long-term durability, even in exposed outdoor conditions.
Designed with a unique 5-corner configuration, the sail connects seamlessly between the home and two custom structural posts:
- 3 attachment points fixed to the house
- 2 attachment points secured to custom galvanised steel posts
To support the sail structure, 140mm diameter galvanised round posts were concreted into the ground and professionally powder coated in Duralloy Solid FlaxPod® Matt by Dulux Powder Coatings, creating a refined finish that integrates beautifully with the property’s exterior palette.
The sail itself was manufactured using premium Shadetec 320 fabric in the sophisticated River Sand colour. Ideal for small to medium applications, Shadetec 320 offers outstanding strength, UV protection, and colour consistency, while remaining stain-resistant and low maintenance.
For maximum seam durability and long-term performance, the sail was sewn using PTFE thread, ensuring the seams retain their strength and integrity even after years of exposure to harsh UV conditions and weather extremes.
